Pioneering Battery Insights: Dr Anton Zorin’s Research Featured in a Leading Scientific Journal

We are proud to share that our Head of Research, Dr Anton Zorin, has been featured in a leading scientific journal for a multi-year interdisciplinary project on understanding why Li-ion batteries in automotive applications reach end of life.

The authors’ research, including Dr Zorin, applied advanced imaging and electrochemical techniques, drawing on university facilities as well as national-facilities such as the Diamond Light Source.
His work demonstrated that, regardless of the application, Li-ion cells typically fail for the same underlying reason: the loss of active lithium to undesirable reactions. This insight is vital for improving industry knowledge around battery degradation and end-of-life behaviour.
At Recyclus Group, this type of pioneering research underpins our mission. Our in-house designed, built, and operated systems can process batteries regardless of how they have reached end of life, whether through age, use, or extreme events.
We recover high-value fractions containing critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel, supporting a resilient UK supply chain and enabling full circularity within the British battery industry.
We are committed to remaining at the forefront of Li-ion battery recycling through continuous innovation, strong collaboration with academic partners and industrial stakeholders, and the deep expertise of our team.
Dr Zorin’s contribution reflects the calibre of research driving our progress and the impact our people are making on this rapidly evolving sector.
Dr Zorin says:
“It’s fantastic to see the effort of past colleagues recognised and for this work to be published. I look forward to using the knowledge developed through my career so far and apply it to have a real-world impact at the cutting edge of an industry. It is encouraging and exciting to be working as part of a company that places high value on research and innovation.”
