We take pride in leading the charge toward sustainability and are excited to be at the forefront of the UK's emerging battery supply chain as a dedicated recycler. Our commitment to innovative recycling practices positions us as key players in creating a more sustainable and responsible industry. We are focused on delivering effective solutions that benefit both our communities and the environment while upholding the highest safety standards.
Recyclus has initiated a £3 million funding round to support the expansion of the UK’s only industrial-scale lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery recycling operation.
The company’s state-of-the-art facility, which is licensed to process up to 22,000 tonnes of batteries annually, has been operational for 14 months. During this period, it has successfully undergone emissions compliance testing and has been fully licensed by the Environment Agency. This facility remains the only UK plant with regulatory approval for industrial-scale battery recycling—a position that took several years to achieve and which provides a significant early-to-market advantage.
The plant is now increasing throughput, and management projects the business will reach breakeven by Q2 2025. Post-breakeven, revenue growth is expected to accelerate through gate fees for the collection of end-of-life Li-ion batteries (ranging from handheld devices to electric vehicles) and from the sale of recycled materials, including nickel, cobalt, lithium, aluminium, and copper
Automotive manufacturers are required to increase the recycled material content in new EV batteries. Recyclus is well-positioned to capitalise on this mandate, with plans to scale and become the market leader in the UK’s lithium-ion battery recycling sector. The company’s broader goal is to establish a "cradle-to-cradle" circular economy, retaining critical minerals within the UK—a strategic priority for both the UK government and the wider automotive industry.
In addition to its recycling capabilities, Recyclus has developed secure storage and safe transportation boxes for Li-ion batteries, designed to contain explosions and fires, thereby preventing propagation. Orders for sales and rentals have already been placed by the UK government, automotive manufacturers, and robotics companies.
The company has also pioneered proprietary recycling technology for lithium thionyl chloride (LTC) batteries, addressing a global environmental issue while commanding a premium gate fee.
