Battery Recycling: From Sustainability Initiative to Strategic Industry

Five years ago, battery recycling was primarily viewed through the lens of sustainability.
Today, it’s increasingly recognised as a cornerstone of energy security, industrial resilience and economic competitiveness.
That shift was reinforced earlier this year by a joint report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the European Patent Office, which found that innovation in battery circularity technologies is accelerating rapidly.
Patent activity in this field has grown significantly faster than battery manufacturing innovation overall, reflecting the increasing importance of recycling, reuse and material recovery in securing future critical mineral supply chains.
As demand for lithium-ion batteries continues to grow across electric vehicles, energy storage and wider electrification, so too does the need for robust, scalable recycling solutions.
Battery recycling is no longer simply about managing end-of-life batteries responsibly. It’s about recovering valuable critical materials, strengthening domestic supply chains, reducing reliance on imported raw materials and supporting the long-term resilience of the battery ecosystem.
